With the continuous development and application of information technologies such as 5G, big data, and Internet of Things, modern industrial manufacturing has ushered in new opportunities, and companies are exploring digital transformation to obtain a sustained competitive advantage in the increasingly competitive market. As the ‘crown’ of industrial manufacturing, the development and production of aircraft are closely related to the national security and international status of a nation, and therefore have always faced considerably brutal competition. Thus, digital transformation is urgently required to improve manufacturing efficiency. This case study systematically and comprehensively introduced a smart manufacturing system and highlighted the digital transformation implementation route of Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China. This implementation route is based on the guideline of ‘defining products, driving manufacturing, and creating value with data’ , combined with the latest generation of information and communication technology, and realises the digitalisation, networking, and intelligence in edge, platform, and application layers; therefore, the digital transformation of aircraft manufacturing is completed. This case study aimed to introduce the advance practices of digital transformation to enterprises that are preparing or undergoing digital transformation, to guide students solve the challenges and difficulties that different industries and enterprises face during digital transformation, and thus to promote the overall digital transformation of China’s manufacturing industry.
