This case study examines Fenglida's practice of deeply integrating algorithms into daily management, revealing the multifaceted management challenges this approach has generated. By adopting algorithmic management, FengLida has distinguished itself from other convenience store chains and achieved rapid expansion. To address traditional challenges in product selection, pricing, and employee performance evaluation, Fenglida deeply integrated algorithms into staff daily operations and introduced a “super algorithm” to replace store managers in certain decision-making processes. This significantly enhanced operational efficiency and strengthened store competitiveness. However, as algorithmic management expanded, systemic misjudgements, staff resistance to algorithmic penalties, and deteriorating service quality emerged, pushing Fenglida into public controversy. By describing FengLida’s algorithm-based store management practices, this case aims to guide readers to explore the impact of algorithmic management on employee motivation and behavior, as well as in reflecting on the future direction of algorithmic management.
