AU Optronics Suzhou Co. (AU Suzhou in short), Ltd. is a LCD panel manufacturer. Amidst the wave of intelligent manufacturing, AU Suzhou initiated digital transformation, and sought help from external digital solution providers. Though external providers had advanced technological know-how, they lacked experience in manufacturing industries, which hindered their ability to offer effective solutions to business problems of manufacturers. In this case, how can AU Suzhou achieve indigenous digital transformation? Under the leadership of top management, AU Suzhou adjusted its organizational structure, mobilized employees of all levels, built a learning organization. Employees of all levels and functions immersed in their business and utilized digital technologies to reconstruct traditional business processes at all-round, and achieved remarkable outcomes. AU Suzhou gradually realized intelligent manufacturing. As a result, staff efficiency was improved by 30%, as the number of employees was reduced from 14000 to 8000. Moreover, unexpectedly AU Suzhou incubated an intelligent manufacturing service provider, AUO Digitech, which provides software and hardware solutions for manufacturing firms. This case aims at analyzing how manufacturing firms can rely on internal resources to realize digital transformation through organizational change, especially how top management stimulates the motivation and capability of employees, and promotes systematic organizational learning.
