This teaching case describes the process of internally developing a strategic management information system in a large commercial bank. The most distinct feature of the project was the intensive user participation, end-to-end throughout the project, ranging from the feasibility study and requirements analysis to various types of testing and system rollout. Many tasks that are typically done by developers were conducted by business experts after necessary technical training, such as the design of the user interface prototype, data model, and testing. Moreover, the business experts also collaborated with the developers in other tasks in system design and coding. At the end, the system rolled out in the entire bank smoothly. This case illustrates the conditions for, pros and cons, and the outcome of the particular form of user participation in information systems development, featuring much doing-it-yourself and joint design.
