This case describes how Easy English Company, a Chinese start-up in English education industry, continuously adapt its operational routines and information technology (IT) configurations for better business-IT alignment during their use of a cloud-based customer relationship management (CRM) system. Cloud computing allows Easy English to gain access to CRM applications hosted by a cloud service provider via the Internet, freeing Easy English from complex software and hardware management. The cloud-based CRM also affords Easy English an adaptive infrastructure that could be reconfigured quickly and easily whenever new business requirements arise, which made it possible for the fast growth of Easy English in a highly volatile market. This teaching case can be used for MBA and graduate-level classes where students they can learn about the challenges in managing business-IT alignment when companies, especially start-ups, implement and use cloud-based enterprise information systems (EIS). This case will also help students understand how to realize the business value of cloud-based EIS.
