Abstract:
Based on Internet technology, West China Hospital of Sichuan University has established the West China Telemedicine Center. As members of a healthcare alliance, local hospitals in Western China may connect through teleconsultation with West China Hospital for assistance in patient diagnosis and patient referrals. This case provides detailed information about the background and the operational process at this center. Data are provided to illustrate the operational performance for member hospital management and remote consultation. This case can help students understand the advantages and disadvantages of teleconsultation compared to the traditional offline consultation in health care. In addition, this case shows how high-quality medical resources become more balanced through Internet technology and how operation management theories and methodologies are used for analyzing and solving the practical problems in health industries.
